Suspected poachers arrested outside Hoedspruit

During the late hours of Saturday, January 20 at around 23:00, a tactical led, joint operation composed of various police units was conducted between Hoedspruit R40 and Phalaborwa.

The operation was in the form of a roadblock where a stop-and-search was conducted.

During this operation, five suspects between the ages of 30 and 36 were arrested in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, North of Skukuza, within the KNP in the Phalaborwa policing area.

A gold Ford Figo was pulled up and the police found that the suspects had ammunition, a 9mm Norinco pistol with the serial number filed and a .375 hunting rifle also with the serial number filed off.

The suspects were arrested on scene and appeared at the Phalaborwa Magistrate Court on Monday, 22 January.

Their case was remanded to 26 January for a formal bail application.

Communication officer, Constable Mongwe, told the Herald that, “The investigation of these suspects is still ongoing.”
