Limpopo Open Land Rover Cross Country Mountain Biking Series

SPROG GIRLS: Tashane Ehlers and Shane van den Heever.

Stanford Lake College hosted the final round of the 2017 Limpopo Open XCO series, the Land Rover XCO Mountain Biking on Saturday, June 24.

SUB-JUNIOR GIRLS: Jani Jordaan, Lilian Baber and Simone Oberholzer.

The event took place on a new track, changing some sections from last year and adding a few features, allowing for a better race setup and a more spectator friendly race. This, however, meant that there was an interesting climb to the finish which made for some spectacular racing.

There were three different courses for the day’s racing: A primary school’s track, a short course and a long course.

SPROG BOYS: Willem Willemse.

The primary school’s track was a 2km loop consisting of a demanding single-track going down the valley and a winding hard climb back up.

The short course was a 4.2km loop for the Sub-junior Boys and Girls, Vet Women and the Master Men and Women. This loop had some interesting features and fast single track sections. The long course included some technical single-track with some demanding features like drop-offs and rock-gardens.

This loop was 4.7km long and was designated for the Youth Boys and Girls, Junior Men and Women, Elite Men and Women, Sub-Vet Men and Women and the Vet Men categories.

The Limpopo finals had a record amount of entries for the series with a total of 109 riders. It was a busy day with registration starting at 6:30am. The races started at intervals with the first one starting at 8am. Prize giving was at 12:30pm, so there was no time for sitting. It was a cold morning, (as expected on race day at Stanford!), with some morning mist and a cool breeze blowing throughout the morning. The sun peeked through the clouds just as the racing ended. The level of racing varied with some intense racing for the top spots, some battling just to keep pedalling and some riders just enjoying every moment.

NIPPER BOYS: John-Ross Donovan, Hanro Ehlers and Nicky Willemse.

Stanford Lake College managed to claim a few podiums with Herman Fourie sprinting into 1st place in the Sub-Junior Boys, Lara Dando and Ani Gutierrez finishing 3rd and 2nd respectively in the Youth Girls. Casper Venter clinched 3rd in the Youth Boys and Matt Wilkinson finished in a spectacular 1st place in the Junior Men.

NIPPER GIRLS: Ilne Kotze and Jana Kotze 1st.

Stanford Lake College would like to say a big thank you to the main sponsor, Land Rover Polokwane, for supporting this event and for the development of mountain biking in Limpopo.

Without sponsors like this, these events cannot take place. Also big thanks to the Stanford team and the local support. Stanford Lake College’s mountain biking is built on the back of the supporting community and some hard working staff.
